“Our main mission in Warsaw is to bring a high level of sub-specialized orthopedic care to that community,” says Dr. Chris Johnson, ONE President. “Of course, Warsaw is often dubbed the ‘Orthopedic capital of the world,’ given the fact there are large orthopedic companies there. It just makes sense for us to bring state-of-the-art orthopedic care and equipment to the region.”
Ground was broken in August for the complex, located just north of Parkview Kosciusko Hospital off County Road 200 North. Once finished, it will include a new orthopedic ambulatory surgery center (ASC), an ONE clinic and a Parkview Physicians Group clinic offering primary care.
The 14,641 square-foot ASC will be known as Parkview Kosciusko SurgeryONE and is expected to be completed by October of 2025.
“We’ll provide the same level of care in Kosciusko County that we provide in Allen County at the Parkview Regional Medical Center (PRMC) campus,” says Dr. Alan McGee, President, Parkview Health Orthopedics. “The ASC will be a state-of-the-art facility focused on same-day discharge for surgeries, such as total joint replacement for hips, knees and shoulders, hand and upper extremity, and sports medicine procedures using robotic-assisted and navigation-assisted techniques and minimally invasive spine surgery — all with state-of-the art care.”
The key ingredient to this massive undertaking is an efficient and effective partnership between ONE and Parkview.
“Our relationship is really predicated on trust, and we share the philosophy of providing excellent care to patients every day,” says Marcy Rogers, SVP/COO Service Line Leader – Ortho at Parkview. “We also have an incredibly talented group of physicians with a diverse background. All of the surgeons will be sub-specialized and fellowship trained, which is not only impressive, but also unique. Our team is highly collaborative. We work collectively to tailor care to our diverse patient population.”
“Patient navigation from the time you walk in the door at ONE is a collaborative process with our partners at Parkview, and walks the patient through every step of their pre-surgical, surgical and post-surgical needs,” says Lori Pagan, CEO of ONE. “Patients will benefit from the expertise at our Ortho NorthEast clinic on the Parkview Kosciusko campus as well as the service excellence provided by the Parkview Orthopedics Service Line at our facilities.”
“Our goal is to increase our presence there,” says Dr. McGee. “ONE has been in Kosciusko County for 25 years, but we’d like to expand our outreach even more and make Warsaw a key access point for care, drawing from communities in northwest Indiana such as Valparaiso, Plymouth, South Bend and Elkhart, and even into southern Michigan.”
“I’m always amazed and humbled by the distance people will travel to receive care from us,” says Dr. Johnson. “We’ve had patients come to us from Iowa, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Kentucky. I think it’s because of the expertise and experience we offer, and unprecedented patient care.”
At this time, the plan is to have 5-6 surgeons at the ASC, which will be a “same-day surgery center,” with all patients going home the same day they have surgery. Follow-up appointments can take place at the ONE clinic on the campus.
Parkview Kosciusko’s Rehabilitation Department is conveniently located in the Parkview Kosciusko main hospital on Mariners Drive, where all orthopedic surgical cases can be treated pre- and post-operatively by physical and occupational therapists, providing patients with immediate access and consistent schedules for their rehab care.
Patients also have the ability to receive pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation at the Whitley clinic, which is located on the corner of State Road 205 and U.S. 30 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
“Word of mouth is so impactful,” says Rogers. “The reputation of the ONE physicians is pretty unparalleled. I hear feedback regularly from our patients on the great care they receive. It’s a comprehensive program and that really appeals to patients. And with the Kosciusko County facility opening, it gives patients another option to receive care in an environment that’s quieter and smaller than other facilities. Patients also prefer to have surgery as close to home as possible, so that’s another reason they would opt to use the Kosciusko County location.”
For the last 10 to 15 years, ASCs have become a popular, less expensive way to receive surgical care.
“ONE recognized the value brought by this model of care more than 30 years ago when it opened one of the first ASCs in the region,” says Dr. McGee. “It’s a growing trend not only here in Indiana, but all over the country.”
“This is cost-effective health care predicated typically on facility size, the type of care that’s provided and the streamlined processes inherent to ambulatory surgery centers, that allow a patient to be discharged home in a timely manner,” says Rogers. “The coworkers at an ASC are usually tight-knit, team-oriented and cross-trained, so they have experience and rigor when it comes to caring for patients. Our Kosciusko facility will have three operating rooms and 12 pre/post-procedure rooms with the ability to expand the facility for future growth. The entire medical complex is expected to create about 140 new jobs.”
“We look forward to bringing our unprecedented patient care to even more people in the region as we grow our footprint and invest in Warsaw,” says Pagan. “Through it all, our strong commitment to excellence will continue to be at the center of everything we do.”
