Protecting Your Customer's Privacy

How serious does your company view the security of your customer’s personal information? Do you know the questions to ask your service provider about your own information and what happens to it? There are steps that every person and every company should be taking to ensure personal information is protected and destroyed in a secure manner. The questions you ask now could save you and your company time and money in the long run.

When a record is no longer of use to a company and all of its needs have been met, it still remains the responsibility of the company until it has been securely destroyed. Just saying “we shred our client’s documents” does not provide enough proof and should not be the go-to answer your employees are giving to your customers. The standards that a company establishes, including the relationships with their shredding vendor, must be capable of ensuring that all risks are addressed at all stages of a record’s life.

A strong security procedure should be a high priority of every company and every household. Document destruction may not make the initial to-do list of a business owner’s mind when starting a company but it should be. The first place to start is to research local vs global companies. Will your company be as important to a global company as it is to you? If not, why would you hire them? The trade-off could be reliability, responsibility, and quality of service. Ask yourself these questions:

Can I create a trustworthy relationship with my route driver?

Does the company do background checks?

Where is my material shred?

Keep an open mind when researching companies. Take note of the bottom line but do not let it solely drive your decision. Feel confident with your shred vendor and feel confident that your company and your client’s documents are in good hands.
