How New Technology Can Benefit Marketing

Event-Based Geo-Fencing

Almost everyone in the business world has heard the term digital marketing but this can entail many different platforms such as Social Media Marketing (SMM), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Email Marketing, Behavioral Targeting, and the like. One of my favorite marketing go-to’s for events is geo-fencing. Geo-fencing started early forms of implementation in the early 2000’s so it is not ‘new-technology’ by any means and it comes in different forms but it is something that is just recently catching on locally, especially when it comes to event-based marketing.

Geo-fencing is in its simplest form a virtual perimeter that corresponds to a physical location per latitude and longitude. Within this virtual perimeter, one that you set based on the area you are trying to reach, is a location based mobile service served through a phone app that has the ability to send coupons or incentives to drive instantaneous traffic to a particular store or area. For example, a retail store may use this to send out a coupon within a five-mile radius the week of Valentine’s Day to remind shoppers who are already in the vicinity, that not only is the holiday coming up but add the extra incentive to shop at their store. Spend $150, get $50 off!

These are some of the ways one may use Geo-fencing for event-based marketing:

  • Push out creative that shows what this year’s t-shirts look like and tell where the t-shirt booths are located.
  • Partner with local sponsors or vendors that may have a special incentive for visiting during the duration of the event.
  • Pin-point similar events where it is the same demo that you are seeking at your event and offer them a reminder to come to your event! If a visitor is at a classic car festival in Michigan in May, chances are he/she may want to come to the ACD Festival in September!

The amazing thing about this technology is that it can pin-point any location for any duration of time. There are many companies currently in the area that offer this service so you do not have to understand the logistics to give it a try. I have seen first hand the cost effectiveness of this type of marketing and its positive impact for companies.
