The public is invited to appreciate the glory of the golden age of the American car at the fourth annual Rolling into Roanoke festival in July.

The event is the result of an all-volunteer effort spearheaded by local businessman Rick Fischer, who has been a longtime classic car enthusiast. In the heyday of manufacturing, cars were an impermeable part of American pop culture. Fischer cites the “cruising scene” and the vehicle as the centerpiece of the original social network. Although not as robust, Fischer says that “love affair” still lives on today—and he’s trying to capitalize on that with the classic car festival in Roanoke.

Why Roanoke though? “I love the quaint, historic aspect of Main Street,” he says. “I appreciate the ability of Roanoke to preserve that, through organizations like the Roanoke Beautification Fund. It’s nice to work with such an amazing team of volunteers who share a common passion.”

In addition to showing off the charming destination that is Main Street Roanoke, the event serves as a hub for auto enthusiasts of all levels. From vintage classics to custom street rods to exotic sports cars, Rolling into Roanoke offers something for every taste.

Although he’s coming off the success of the past few years, he’s not complacent. That’s why he plans to switch the theme every year. To that end, he has secured a few versions of the most recognized hot rods featured in the iconic film “American Graffiti.” Plans also call for recreating the Mel’s Drive-In feeling, “like you’re hanging out in front of the diner back in the day.” It’s not just a theme, but a way to re-create the atmosphere,” Fischer says.

Fischer also plans to pay tribute to all Ford models from antique to new. Cars with superchargers will be featured as well. Post World War II, supercharging became common for boosting torque on truck engines and a popular go-faster mod for smaller cars.

Just like in years past, attendees will also find a wide variety of food, entertainment and door prizes. More than a dozen food vendors are set to serve up everything from burgers to wine slushies. Back for its third year, GM and UAW’s hospitality trailer will feature a Made-in-America exhibit and a remote control racetrack. A live DJ will add another dimension to entertainment, and registered exhibitors can win door prizes. Fischer invites attendees to try out the TrackLab.biz mobile chassis dyno testing from 8:30 a.m to 8 p.m., to get a better idea of their car’s performance capabilities.

Proceeds from Rolling into Roanoke, which takes place Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., The park will have extended entertainment and attractions until 8 p.m. The event will benefit the Roanoke Beautification Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, as well as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg and National Automotive and Truck Museum in Auburn.
