Article by Tracy Duncan; (260) 480-8220 on Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 11:48 AM

The community is invited to join the American Red Cross and become heroes during the Noble County Heroes Campaign in March. The fundraising campaign provides financial support for the Northeast Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross, specifically funding community services provided in Noble County. The kickoff for this fundraising campaign is Friday, Feb. 10, at 8 a.m. at the Kendallville Pizza Hut.

For generations, the Red Cross has been providing Heroes to our communities. In order for the Red Cross to meet our commitments to our communities now and in the future, we need citizens willing to be a “Hero” for the American Red Cross. An individual becomes a Hero by agreeing to raise at least $1,000 for Noble County services. The funds can be raised in a variety of ways. Individuals may work alone or may choose to involve their company, civic club, church or school in their fund raising efforts.

During 2011, Northeast Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to 11 disasters, assisting 12 families of 45 people in their hour of need. More than 33 percent were uninsured at the time their disaster struck. More than $7,400 was provided in direct client assistance for Disaster Services clients which was more than a 35 percent increase over the previous year.

The American Red Cross provides services to people in times of disaster such as single family home or apartment fires, weather-related disasters and man-made disasters. In addition, the Northeast Indiana Chapter also provides services to the Armed Forces and their families. They assisted families in Noble County with 12 emergency messages and served 37 Noble County military service members and their families with other communications and special events.

More than 150 Health and Safety Services courses were offered in Noble County last year and more than 950 Noble County residents were trained in Red Cross programs. Examples of training courses include First Aid, CPR, Family Caregiving, Lifeguarding, Swimming and the Babysitter’s Training Course. Additionally the Biomedical Services of the American Red Cross collected more than 1,000 units of blood from Noble County residents, potentially saving more than 3,000 lives!
