Focused on Imports

For The Import Doctors, keeping its focus narrowed to Asian vehicles makes it the best place for repairs.

For more than 16 years, The Import Doctors have been diagnosing and treating problems and prescribing preventative measures to keep cars in excellent health. The team has built a reputation for high-quality work at a lower price than is typically found at a dealership. That’s a point of pride for owner Dave Goddard.

Goddard has been working on Asian imports since he was a teenager.

“I got my first job at a Honda dealer when I was 16. Later I worked at an Acura/Subaru dealership. It’s all I’ve known,” says Goddard. “Then I decided to go out on my own and open this shop. I had a partner at first, but he was ready to retire so since this past July it’s just been me.”

Goddard has a highly-trained team of four technicians that handles everything from routine oil changes and tire rotations to transmission repairs and engine replacements and everything in between. The team’s sole focus on imports means they have a specialized skill set that leads to reliable, top-notch service.

“It’s hard to do all makes and all models. It’s hard for me to keep up with just the Asian cars because the technology literally changes year-to-year. The technology in cars today is more than what most fighter jets have,” explains Goddard. “You almost have to be a computer engineer as well as a mechanic to figure stuff out. Everything is computer-controlled. All the computers talk to each other and are integrated into each other so when one thing goes out, it affects multiple different things.”

Goddard and the other mechanics use state-of-the-art scanners that help trouble-shoot when there are issues. He stresses, though, that just because there’s expensive technology involved, it doesn’t mean he’s out to make a quick buck.

“I am always honest and up front with people. I don’t sell them anything they don’t need. If their brakes are 20 percent and they’ll last until another oil change, I’ll tell them, ‘You don’t have do this right now.’ If they’re 5 percent and they’re going to go metal-to-metal in three weeks, I’m going to tell you to replace your brakes.”

At the core of the business, The Import Doctors wants to ensure that customers get the best service possible at the lowest possible price from someone who values integrity and doing the right thing. It’s why Goddard’s been able to grow his business by keeping loyal customers and attracting new generations of car owners who trust him and his team to take care of their vehicles.

“I’m trying to save you money, be honest with you and still keep your car going,” Goddard says. “These cars will go 300,000 or 400,000 miles if you maintain them. We can help you do that. Maintenance is required on these and if you do it, you can drive them a long time. Stick with me and I’ll stick with you.”
