Many people seek help from a financial advisor because they want to pay off debt, save for college or prepare for retirement. The advisors at Jehl & Kreilach Financial Management hope to help in another way, too. The team especially enjoys working with those who are interested in devising a plan to give back to others.

“We want to make sure they’re meeting their goals and looking after their well-being but at the same time we want to help them support the causes that are most important to them. If giving is important, then we want to help prioritize that for them,” says Cameron Collier, CFP®, CKA®

Collier and Julie Burenga, CPA, CFP®, along with co-founders and partners Gregg Jehl and Kevin Kreilach, prioritize getting to know and listening to their clients. They say it is vital to understand what clients value and what their long-term and short-term goals are. For some, the idea of philanthropy may seem out of reach.

“They may not know what’s possible,” explains Burenga. “A lot of people would like to be charitably inclined 

but may feel they have to prioritize other goals first. We ask that question to every new client, ‘Do you have charitable inclinations?’ They might say, ‘I don’t have enough money for that.’ We help them understand efficient strategies to meet savings goals and still give charitably as well. Regardless of their income or stage of life, there’s still joy in giving.”

Collier says he gets great pleasure out of helping clients steward their resources and positively influence the lives of others and their community.

“What I have found is that it’s more important to focus on helping your clients grow instead of focusing solely on the growth of a portfolio,” he says. “How can we help them grow in their impact as opposed to their net worth? For some, maintaining their standard of giving is often as important as maintaining their standard of living.”

“By working with clients in this way, we’re able to have an impact on our community and see them experience the joy of generosity.” Burenga says. “That’s rewarding for all of us. They feel like they’re making a difference, and they are.”

The team at Jehl & Kreilach is quick to point out, though, that they understand that charitable giving isn’t a priority for everyone. 

“We never place our values on someone’s financial plan. It’s their goals, first and foremost, always,” stresses Burenga. “Something we’ve really learned about ourselves over the last five years is that all of us are really rewarded, personally and professionally, by the challenge of helping people with that charitable aspect of their plan. If that happens to be a goal, that’s really great for us. We enjoy helping others have an impact.”

“There’s a phrase I actually have on my wall,” Collier adds. “It says ‘We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.’ I think that summarizes my philosophy.”
