Prioritize Your Mental Wellbeing: It’s Up to You

One in five American adults experienced a poor mental health condition in the past year. In our lifetime, that number will increase to one in two – half the population, according to LookUp Indiana.

Many businesses work together to ensure the topic of mental wellbeing and self-care among business builders is recognized and supported. It is unreasonable to expect demands to become manageable without first managing ourselves. There are 27 million entrepreneurs in the United States. According to a small business study by Springer, “Mental health differences directly or indirectly affected 72 percent of entrepreneurs in this sample.” Further, about a third of the entrepreneurs “reported having two or more mental health conditions, while 18 percent reported having three or more mental health conditions.”  

If you own or have owned a business, you understand the intense roller coaster ride of emotions it is. It is consuming and demanding. Founders of startups wear multiple hats for their businesses – although no one is good at all things (IT, finance, HR, marketing, customer service, etc.).

To manage your wellbeing, first, seek professional help when needed. Mental illness is an illness. It is not a character or personality flaw. Also, do the one thing that makes the least sense when you’re managing your seemingly endless priorities – schedule “me time.” You may chuckle, but this is essential. 

Here are some examples of “me time.”

  • Sit in a room for five minutes. Lights off. Door closed. Seated on the floor where no one can see you. No internet, emails, phone calls.
  • Practice 4-7-8 relaxation breathing. Inhale through your nostrils for 4 seconds. Hold the breath for 7 seconds. Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. 
  • Take a walk at lunchtime.
  • Get outside whenever possible – connectivity to nature is so calming.
  • Are you open to a challenge? Break the hustle habit. Make “me” a priority.  It’s good for business. It reduces stress levels, it improves clarity and creativity and it boosts productivity.
