“When we were children, our mother would drive us around our community and she would deliver things like wheelchairs and walkers and hospital beds to people who needed those items, but couldn’t afford them,” says Tom Marcuccilli, president of STAR Financial Group. “She made sure we saw the importance of giving back to our community. That was always very important to her. And now, it’s very important to us.”
Tom and his brother, Jim, chairman and CEO of STAR Financial Bank, are proud of the countless contributions their family’s company has made to nonprofit organizations in northeast Indiana, but they don’t do it to be recognized.
“We never anticipate anything in return or any kind of acknowledgement,” says Jim. “We just hope the funds we donate are being put to good use and that’s all the thanks we need.”
Recently, Jim and Tom were honored by University of Saint Francis President Sister Elise Kriss with a Bonzel Society of Lifetime Giving medal to recognize them for their generous donations to the school.
“We thank you for your long-term giving and contributions to the university,” says Sister Elise. “We wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing without your support and we are very grateful.”
Sister Elise presented Jim and Tom with the medal just outside of the trading center room they donated to the university at its downtown Fort Wayne campus. The room, which includes a ticker, is set up to allow a broad range of students hands-on experience in building their own financial portfolios and making real-life decisions just like they will do in the real world.
“Our focus with our giving has always been on education, underprivileged families and children, economics and the arts,” says Jim. “We are very supportive of financial literacy and have donated trading centers not only to Saint Francis, but also to Anderson College and Indiana Tech.”
“We couldn’t do any of this without our employees,” says Tom. “We have nearly 600 employees and among them, we have board members on some 75 non-profits. And every year, we give each employee a paid day off to volunteer at a charity of their choice.”
In addition to Saint Francis, STAR has partnered with numerous organizations over the years, including Junior Achievement, the Embassy Theatre, The Rescue Mission, Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Erin’s House for Grieving Children and Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities.
“Giving back to our community has helped us to grow as a company and helped us to grow as individuals,” says Jim. “It’s not something we strive to do, it’s just a part of who we are.”
