The Value of Partnerships

Since he was a kid, Brad Toothaker has been immersed in the real estate business. From working at his family’s property management company in Plymouth, Indiana, to his studies at UCLA, to a stint with renowned developer Trammell Crow, Toothaker has always known that his future lay in real estate. Today he is president and CEO of Bradley Company, a full-service commercial real estate firm serving Indiana and west Michigan, and that’s exactly where Toothaker wants to be.

“I’ve kind of lived the business since I was in junior high school, and I’ve never had any inkling to do anything different,” says Toothaker.

Throughout his career, Toothaker has nurtured a passion for value creation, particularly in projects that revolve around urban development. He takes particular pride in Fort Wayne’s Skyline Tower, a $40 million mixed-use development that will complete the Ash Skyline Plaza. Bradley Company has partnered with developer Great Lakes Capital, where Toothaker also serves as managing partner, to develop and manage the building, providing on-site services to its tenants.

“It’s the culmination of all the things we do at Bradley Company,” says Toothaker. “It’s the whole nexus of our business.”

That nexus covers services that range from brokerage to commercial property management to market research. Since being named president in 2003, Toothaker has led the company in its growth to include nearly every area that touches commercial real estate.

“We cover all the product types in what we do,” says Toothaker. “We’re a very complete commercial real estate solution. We really run the spectrum in the region we’re in.”

Despite his experience, Toothaker knows that he couldn’t do it alone. He defines his leadership style as a player-coach approach, preferring to cultivate talent by working alongside fellow employees to help clients.

“We’ve got great people in our company,” says Toothaker. “We’ve got a strong culture toward creating value, not just transactions. It’s a different mentality.”

Bradley Company’s focus on value creation means cultivating long-term relationships by treating investors and clients as partners. Those relationships, says Toothaker, will ultimately move the company into the future.

“We want to be long-term partners with our communities, investors and owners,” says Toothaker. “Ultimately, our focus on people will continue to lead us into new markets.”

Bradley Company has realized significant growth under Toothaker’s leadership. With more than 250 professionals managing 2,900 multi-housing units and more than eight million square feet of space, the company has become the largest commercial real estate solutions provider in Indiana and west Michigan.

“We’ve really had tangible results within the ranks of our leaders and our businesses, as well as our physical footprint,” says Toothaker. “It’s all about creating value.”
