I am often asked, “How do you successfully shop a sale?” My response is always the same: for the best selection, shop the first markdown and be prepared with a list of what you are looking for.
Why should you be prepared? If you need to replenish basic needs in your closet, such as black trousers or solid turtlenecks, other people will be looking for those same items and, therefore, they won’t stick around long. Why? Because these are the items we wear the most. Your basics may be different than the ones listed, but you know what yours are and they are sure to be someone else’s basics, too.
Another reason to be prepared is because often we are searching for items to coordinate with pieces we already own. Bring the items you are trying to match with you to the store. A good salesperson is happy to help you find the perfect item to compliment a garment.
Also, when heading out to shop a sale, look at your accessory wardrobe and see if you need new gloves, belts, scarves, shoes and handbags. A sale is often the perfect way to finish an outfit with the perfect accessory.
Last but not least, use a sale to discover a new designer or look. The sale price allows you to step out of your comfort zone and surprise yourself by trying a new style, color or shape.
Remember, it’s only January and winter lasts through March. There is plenty of time to enjoy and wear your sale purchases. Happy shopping!
