Count On Briner

Relationships and organization are a big deal at Briner Building Inc. in Bluffton.

“We’re very organized as a company,” says Mike Swinford, president of Briner Building Inc. “We manage all of our office and construction operations with weekly, in-house and job site meetings with employees, sub-contractors and owners. I think it’s one of the things that differentiates Briner from the competition.”

As a design-build general contractor specializing in commercial and industrial building construction, Briner Building Inc. is a one-stop, design-build service for companies looking to build a new facility or expanding at their current facility.

“Our main focus has always been our many return customer relationships,” says Swinford. “Our customers know they can count on us to deliver the products and services they need within their budget and schedule. Most customers want a single source design-build contractor like us. From initial design and engineering to the final construction of site work through the building construction with the related interior finishes, including electrical and mechanical systems, we’re responsible for the completed building project.

Over the last 45 years, Briner has designed and built several million square feet of commercial and industrial building systems throughout northeast Indiana. The projects have ranged in size from 5,000 square foot buildings to a recent 528,000 square foot manufacturing facility constructed in Wabash.

“We’re a design solution for whatever our customers need,” says Bryan Harshbarger, vice president of Sales and Marketing at Briner. “Be it installing the entrance door or an entire building, we’re a design solution from concept to completion.”

Harshbarger is one of four partners who own Briner Building Inc. Swinford has worked with Briner for 40 years, Vice President/Construction Dave Dunwiddie, 36 years, Vice President/Project Development Chris Elser, 27 years, and Harshbarger, seven years.

The Briner leadership team also enjoys and recognizes the importance of their employees, who organize and self-perform the work at the company.

“Besides customer relationships, our employees are our No. 1 asset,” says Swinford. “We have a 40-employee team that works well together for the common success of our customers and their building projects. You’ve got to have committed employees you can trust to take ownership and who are passionate about their work.”

“We also have a long-term and skilled employee base,” says Elser. “Typically when we hire a new employee, they stay with us for most, if not all, of their working career. We try to treat our employees as we want to be treated.”

Briner is a merit shop general contractor and is a member of the ABC and BCA construction organizations. It has a 35-year relationship with Butler Manufacturing Co. designing and building commercial and industrial Butler Building systems. Briner was recently awarded the #1 Sales Volume Builder in the Midwest Region by Butler.

“We emphasize to our customers that we’re their local building contractor,” says Elser. “We have designed and built projects in many communities and counties for more than four decades, but we try to hire local, qualified people. Our common goal is to help create as many jobs in the local community as possible.”

“Our shared belief is, ‘Relationship, Trust and Performance,’” says Swinford. “Briner has lived up to those words for 45 years and counting.”
